Material Handling & Conveyor Equipment

Transfers, Turns & Sortation Systems

Turn, flip, align, register, divert, and route products so they reach the correct process, orientation, and production path.

Available systems range from compact bump turns and turnovers to roller-registration conveyors, reject diverts, and application-specific sortation equipment.

What Determines the Right Transfer or Sortation System?

Five areas usually determine the turning, registration, or routing method.

Product Shape and Orientation

Document the product size, thickness, surface, and the orientation required by the next process.

Required Turn, Flip, or Alignment

Determine whether the product must rotate, invert, square against an edge, or simply change lanes.

Conveyor Speed and Product Gap

Review line speed and the spacing available between products for the turn, registration, or divert to occur.

Sort or Reject Logic

Identify what triggers a divert, where rejected product goes, and how the event should be recorded.

Controls and Downstream Equipment

Review signal sources, control interfaces, guarding, and the machine receiving the product.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a conveyor bump turn?

A bump turn rotates a product as it travels, usually to change its orientation before the next machine. The turn can be configured to the left or right depending on the layout and the process that follows.

What is the difference between a turn and a turnover?

A turn rotates the product within the same plane so a different edge leads. A turnover flips the product so the opposite side faces up for printing, labeling, tipping, or inspection.

How does a registration conveyor work?

A registration conveyor uses angled rollers or a traversing mechanism to move the product against a fixed reference edge, squaring and justifying it so a position-sensitive process can be performed accurately.

Can a barcode or camera control a divert?

In many configurations a barcode reader, pattern-matching camera, or line control can signal a divert module to remove or redirect a selected product. The signal path, timing, and product spacing must be reviewed for the specific line.

Route Product to the Right Place

Describe how the product arrives, how it must be positioned, and where selected items need to go, and ATP can help identify an appropriate transfer or sortation approach.
